The ensemble cast includes series stars Ernie Hudson as Leo Glynn, Oz's warden; Terry Kinney as Tim McManus, who heads up Emerald City, the prison's experimental unit; Rita Moreno as Sister Peter Marie Reimondo, the prison's staff psychologist; Harold Perrineau as Augustus Hill, the wheelchair-bound narrator of the series; J.K. Simmons as neo-Nazi Vern Schillinger; Lee Tergesen as lawyer-turned-inmate Tobias Beecher; Eamonn Walker as Kareem Said, a Muslim who considers himself a political prisoner; and Dean Winters as crafty convict Ryan O'Reily.
Among other cast regulars are Kirk Acevedo as inmate Miguel Alvarez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as prisoner Simon Adebisi, Granville Adams, Jamar Allah, Reg E. Cathey, Seth Gilliam, Tom Mardirosian, Christopher Meloni, George Morfogen, muMs, Austin Pendleton, Lance Reddick, Kristin Rohde, David Zayas, Chuck Zito, Lauren Velez as Dr. Gloria Nathan, Scott William Winters as Ryan O'Reily's brother Cyril and B.D. Wong as Father Ray Mukada.
Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana executive produce the dramatic series dealing with the brutality of life and death in a maximum-security prison. With story lines written by Fontana, "Oz" portrays the relentless struggles for power inside the walls of Oswald prison, where inmates and correctional officers battle ruthlessly for survival amid warring factions and explosive acts of retribution.
Barry Levinson won an Academy Award for his direction of 1988's "Rain Man," which also captured the Oscar for Best Picture. He also won an Emmy for Best Director for the pilot of "Homicide: Life on the Street," and he has directed such feature films as "Sleepers," "Diner," "The Natural," "Tin Men," "Good Morning, Vietnam," "Avalon," "Bugsy" and "Disclosure."
Tom Fontana earned an Emmy Award for writing "Homicide: Life on the Street" and was also writer/producer on "St. Elsewhere," which brought him two Emmys for writing. He has also received four Peabody Awards and a Humanitas Prize, among many other honors.
